New data protection resource hub launches for SMEs

New data protection resource hub created to address lack of resources available to small businesses and freelancers

New data protection resource hub launches for SMEs

A new SME-focused online resource on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has launched today. The Data Protection Hub (DPHub) provides free independent information on data protection that is specifically targeted towards the needs of small businesses and freelancers.

It’s been set up by cyber security consultant Mark Chimley, who founded Derby-based firms Genus One and Dapris, as a result of the lack of data protection advice available to SMEs that account for 99% of the five million or so private sector enterprises in the UK.

Mark commented: “While companies working in the information security community have been aware of the GDPR changes for at least a year or two, it is only now that larger businesses outside of this sector are starting to take the matter seriously. For small businesses, there is still a dearth of understanding of general data privacy requirements and many are still completely unaware of the forthcoming GDPR changes.

“SMEs now also need to consider the impact of the Data Protection Bill, a separate piece of legislation, yet very few businesses understand how this will impact the GDPR. The new bill ostensibly serves to implement the GDPR in UK law in order to protect UK citizens' personal data rights after Brexit. Organisations will need to comply with both the GDPR and the revised Data Protection Act but the two should be synonymous in most cases.”

DPHub will therefore come as welcome news to SMEs as these often have limited resources and scope for implementing information security and compliance procedures and measures. It provides a growing set of simple, relevant and independent information that will enable them to benefit from better security practices with minimal impact on their operations.

By targeting these businesses which are the most ignorant of data protection requirements, the hub will significantly improve privacy protection for a wide range of UK citizens.

“Small businesses need to be on board with the GDPR before it comes into effect. But they're not, so the privacy of individuals are at risk. Existing advice on data protection is too complicated and cumbersome, and typically only large organisations can devote the resources to wade through it and implement the necessary changes to their procedures. That’s why I launched DPHub: to promote awareness of data protection, privacy and security in a way that SMEs can understand and act upon.”
