Are you a business owner? See below article!

Do not score an own goal during Euro 2016! How important it is for employers to ensure their employee's know where they stand.

Are you a business owner? See below article!

The countdown to Euro 2016 is almost over, and the anticipation is rife as ever. With a promising team on paper, and a positive build up, all we can do now is hope that on grass, England’s footballers perform and put on a spectacle for all observing. No doubt it will be a great tournament to watch, alongside the many other fixating sporting events this summer.

With games such as England vs Wales on the 16th June kicking off at 2:00 pm in the afternoon, and many other games being played within working hours, it poses a question to employers, one that tests their lenience, patriotism and organisation.

Some employers will be doing their very best to ensure team members are able to watch their country play whilst at work, with full kits, face paints and vuvuzela’s perhaps making an appearance in some offices. Unfortunately, this will not be the case across all employing organisations. Many will have to use their smartphone for score updates and catch up on the goals out of working hours.

For an employer in the UK, and across all organisations, there must be a fair system in place for allowing annual leave, and carefully managing the situations that may arise. Each individual situation must be treated in the same way as any other, and carefully managed alongside your company policies. It should be made clear to employees what the company policy is with the Euro tournament. Whether that policy be based around employee permissions with watching the football on the internet, organisation of team members working whilst others watch, or the implication of formal proceedings should an employee be caught watching the Euros within working hours. However it is decided by the employer, it must be transferred effectively and comprehensively to the employee, to ensure the situation is understood. This has to be agreed upon and accepted between each company individually.

Chris from Prospire says – ‘Cultures in business are very different, therefore employers have a duty to let their employees know what is to be expected throughout the Euro period, whether that be showing the games on television in the work place, or using discretion to allow the employees to check the results on their phones. It is imperative to set out the expectations of the employer to avoid any unnecessary conflict.”

Sickness absence is proving a continual issue for UK employers, and with the ‘no go’ policy some companies will have on the Euro’s, this brings risk and potential troubling circumstances. Employee sickness can be corrosive to a business’s performance and operation, high levels of absence can demotivate those employees who have to take on the absent employee’s work, cause all-round disruption to productivity and adversely affect an employer’s continuity of service to its clients. This outlines how important it is for a business to have efficient, clear and culture specific rulings, guidelines and information around where it stands.

Providing the issues that may arise are prepared for and dealt with professionally, and the planning and organisation of company policies are crystal clear, there is no reason we can’t all make the very most out of the time supporting our country through their summer football campaign, and continue to maintain working effectively and performing whilst doing so. If your business is unsure what to do over the Euros, whether that predicament be how to deal with policies and absenteeism, or where to get the face paint from, get in touch with us, we can help!
