The countdown to Euro 2016 is almost over, and the anticipation is rife as ever. With a promising team on paper, and a positive build up, all we can do now is hope that on grass, England’s footballers perform and put on a spectacle for all observing. No doubt it will be a great tournament to watch, alongside the many other fixating sporting events this summer.
With games such as England vs Wales on the 16th June kicking off at 2:00 pm in the afternoon, and many other games being played within working hours, it poses a question to employers, one that tests their lenience, patriotism and organisation.
Some employers will be doing their very best to ensure team members are able to watch their country play whilst at work, with full kits, face paints and vuvuzela’s perhaps making an appearance in some offices. Unfortunately, this will not be the case across all employing organisations. Many will have to use their smartphone for score updates and catch up on the goals out of working hours.
For an employer in the UK, and across all organisations, there must be a fair system in place for allowing annual leave, and carefully managing the situations that may arise. Each individual situation must be treated in the same way as any other, and carefully managed alongside your company policies. It should be made clear to employees what the company policy is with the Euro tournament. Whether that policy be based around employee permissions with watching the football on the internet, organisation of team members working whilst others watch, or the implication of formal proceedings should an employee be caught watching the Euros within working hours. However it is decided by the employer, it must be transferred effectively and comprehensively to the employee, to ensure the situation is understood. This has to be agreed upon and accepted between each company individually.
